  • Chargers' Merriman has knee ligament damage
08-22 8:21 am by ESPN Football News

Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman, who has missed more than a week of practice because of a sore left knee, said Thursday night that he has ligament damage and is evaluating his option

  • 49ers RB Frank Gore rushed the football eight times for 51 yards on Thursday against the Bears. He also pulled in two balls for 19 yards.

OPINION: Gore was a beast on Thursday night averaging 6.3 yards per carry - And it wasn't like he had wide open lanes on all eight carries, the guy cut on a dime and changed directions like a more powerful Marshall Faulk. Gore is Martz's new Marshall Faulk, and if healthy, expect top 5RB numbers in 2008. We would say we're moving Gore up a slot or two in our rankings based on his explosive play, but we already have him as our No. 5 overall ranked player in heading into this upcoming season... that's ahead of Joseph Addai.

  • According to ESPN.com, even though Ravens RB Willis McGahee is off crutches, the stud running back is not able to jog just yet. McGahee's target return date is Week 1 against the Bengals. "I will be ready, but I don't know about playing in the preseason," McGahee said. "We will have to wait and see. It's always making progress. Every day I come out here, it's getting better."

OPINION: He can't run, but he is working out in the pool. "I know it ain't exactly running, but running in the pool is great conditioning," McGahee said. "Just ask Michael Phelps." Consider McGahee an absolute steal in the late third-round, where he is currently falling. Just be sure you snag Ray Rice, as the combo should crank out top 8-10RB numbers in 2008 under Cam Cameron. Rice could start Week 1, there is no question that there is some risk at this point, but at late third-round value, McGahee could end up being one of the biggest fantasy steals in 2008. Just grab Rice, even if in the late sixth-round!

  • Bears WR Rashied Davis caught four passes for 58 yards and two touchdowns on Thursday night against the 49ers.

OPINION: Rashied Davis is an interesting late-round grab - Orton appears to trust him. Don't count on him, but don't overlook him as one of the last WRs on your squad (if in a larger league).

  • Bears QB Kyle Orton completed 10-of-17 passes for 147 yards and two touchdowns on Thursday night against the 49ers.

OPINION: Orton looks like the clear starter heading into this upcoming season. Unless Orton suffers injury, you're looking at the Bears 2008 starter. Rashied Davis caught four passes for 58 yards and two touchdowns, so clearly the two have a nice rapport going. Keep that in mind if you need a late-round WR grab.

  • 49ers QB J.T. O'Sullivan completed 7-of-8 passes for 126 yards and 1TD on Thursday night against the Bears. O'Sullivan connected with WR Jason Hill on a 37-yard touchdown pass.

OPINION: O'Sullivan is a guy to monitor in medium size dynasty leagues - He is definitely a guy to consider grabbing in relatively deep dynasty leagues if you have a spot to burn. He still has a lot to prove, so don't expect too much just yet.

  • Texans' Cook charged with marijuana possession

Houston Texans fullback Jameel Cook was arrested and charged with marijuana possession Wednesda

  • According to ESPN.com, Broncos rookie RB Ryan Torain, who recently underwent surgery to repair a broken bone in his elbow, is healing faster than expected. The new target date for Torain's return is now Oct. 20, which is Week 7.

OPINION: The Broncos have a bye in Week 8, so don't be surprised if they give Torain that extra two weeks to heal. This is good news for Torain dynasty owners, as Shanny seems to love the power back. This is obviously bad news for Selvin Young owners, not that we thought Young would have started more than 8-9 games anyway under coach Mike Shanahan. As we have said for well over a month or two... trade Selvin while his value is actually pretty high. It's either that, or draft Torain and Andre Hall and hope that one of the other back-ups does not get a crack at the starting gig at some point this season.

  • Broncos rookie tailback could return by October
08-21 6:06 pm by ESPN Football News
