News You Can Use –Aug 05

  • According to DenverPost.com, the Denver Broncos "already have counseling in place" for WR Brandon Marshall, who could have his suspension reduced from three games to two games if he seeks counseling.

OPINION: Goodell apparently considered slapping Marshall with a four-game suspension due to his three arrests in 12 months, but the fact that Marshall was never convicted reportedly played a role in Goodell's decision. Marshall is still a huge question mark if you ask us. Two games isn't the end of the world, but we aren't sold on Marshall staying out of trouble. On draft day, we still recommend that fantasy owners take players like Plaxico Burress and Anquan Boldin over Marshall. Even in fresh dynasty drafts, both Boldin and Burress might be safer bets.

  • According to JSOnline.com, Texans WR Andre Johnson (hamstring) was held out of practice on Monday and is likely to miss the team's first preseason game against the Broncos. Johnson injured the hamstring during Saturday's practice. "Andre is doing well," coach Gary Kubiak said. "I think we're very fortunate with Andre, but I think we're going to take the cautious approach. We're going to make sure we get him 120 percent back before he comes back out here. We'll try to keep his condition level up, but I think we're very fortunate that it wasn't worse."

OPINION: Monitor his progress for sure, but expect A.J. to be a top 5-7 fantasy wide receiver this year. He is always a bit of an injury concern, but he is worth the gamble given his ceiling.

  • According to Bengals.com, Bengals WR Chad Johnson pulled in roughly a 65-yard bomb during training camp practice on Monday night. Chad had some things to say today: "It's going to take me the month of August to do what it takes everybody else four or five months to do," Johnson said. "It's going to be the best year ever."

OPINION: We told everyone to trade for Chad Johnson while he was threatening to holdout earlier this off-season. And now we will continue to tell you that Chad Johnson is going to have a top 3-5 fantasy WR season in 2008. Apparently he agrees.

  • According to KansasCity.com, Texans RB Chris Brown was back at practice on Monday. Brown, who had a painkilling injection last week, said that his back felt great after Monday's workout. Everything held up great," Brown said. "Hopefully, I can just build on that."

OPINION: Talk about running-back-by-committee... Houston has Ahman Green, Chris Brown, Steve Slaton, Chris Taylor, Darius Walker and Mike Bell all fighting for carries, and the starting job isn't out of reach for any of those guys. If you ask us, the most talented two of the group are Steve Slaton and Chris Taylor. Chris Brown would probably have the biggest advantage if he could just stay healthy. Our favorite of the bunch is Chris Taylor, but that doesn't mean he will get a shot to start any time soon.

  • According to reports, Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin will miss the team's preseason opener due to a hamstring injury. Boldin recently had an MRI, and even though the results came back negative, the Cardinals are expected to play it safe.

OPINION: Boldin is a sneaky WR2 this year. If you plan to go RB/RB in your upcoming fantasy draft, you still might land two Anquan Boldin types in the third- and fourth-rounds. Usually we advise that fantasy owners go RB/RB and take this approach, but we're actually on board with the RB/WR strategy this year and we feel that either approach can lead you to victory in 2008. Still, if you're a RB/RB kind of drafter, don't worry... Boldin, and guys like Roy Williams, are waiting for you in the third- and fourth-rounds.

  • Sources: Browns' Cribbs wants to tweak contract

Pro Bowl kick returner Joshua Cribbs wants to restructure his contract with the Cleveland Browns, multiple sources have told ESPN.co

  • According to Rotoworld, NFL Network's Adam Schefter is reporting that a deal that would send QB Brett Favre elsewhere in 2008 is "highly unlikely" now that he has reported to camp.

OPINION: The thinking here is that the Packers would need an offer that they could not refuse in order to deal the QB. Multiple sources have also suggested that the Packers may consider releasing Favre right before the start of Week one. This would limit Favre's ability to start for the Vikings in Week one, as the Pack face the Vikes in the team's opener on Monday night, and Minnesota is thought to be Favre's target landing spot if in fact released. By the way, Adrian Peterson would thrive beyond expectations if Favre is under center in Minnesota in 2008.

  • According to AZCentral.com, RB Marcel Shipp has been released from the Arizona Cardinals.

OPINION: J.J. Arrington could still end up being the team's primary back-up runner early on, but we like Tim Hightower from here on out. If Edge can stay healthy, he might have a very solid season this year - He is very underrated right now in early August drafts.

  • According to a Chicago Sun Times writer, the Chicago Bears have released their depth chart, which has RB Matt forte is listed as the team's starting rusher.

OPINION: No surprise here. Forte could be in for a 1,000-yard season as a rookie. Just keep in mind that rookies tend to hit that "rookie wall" when they attempt to play 16 games as an NFL starter. Rookie rushers just are not ready for a 16-game season, plus with all the eight-man fronts Forte is bound to see in '08, the guy will surely breakdown, or get hurt, down the stretch. Obviously don't consider trading Forte in dynasty leagues due to this possibility, but keep this in mind if you have Forte in any redraft leagues this year. He is a great "sell-high" player come Week eight or nine.

  • According to Rotoworld, the Green Bay Packers have placed QB Brett Favre on their 80-man roster and put CB Condrew Allen (knee) on IR, which ends his season.

OPINION: Looks like Favre passed his physical. We will keep you updated on this situation, as usual.

  • According to NJ.com, Giants RB Ahmad Bradshaw had this to say on being jailed for 30 days in Virginia in June: "Nothing's been done since I've been drafted by the Giants," Bradshaw said. "There's no question about that. It should be over with after those 30 days. All this comes from a juvenile offense."

OPINION: Bradshaw has to be one of our favorite sleepers entering this upcoming fantasy season. He is backing up a 6-4, 264 pound running back and the Giants coaching staff has already made it very clear that they will "ride the hot hand" this season when it comes to rolling with a running back. Don't get us wrong, we like Jacobs, and we are actually really liking the idea of drafting both Jacobs and Bradshaw this year as a sneaky RB2 combo (given how far Jacobs is currently falling) - But if you're looking for a breakout candidate at the running back position in 2008, one that won't cost you an early selection, Bradshaw is your guy!

  • According to Ohio.com, Browns coach Romeo Crennel is impressed with third-year WR Travis Wilson. ''Travis has had a particularly good OTA (organized team activities) period, he began to show up and make some plays, and I think that has carried over to training camp here because when the ball comes his way, he's been catching them,'' Crennel he said. ''I think that helps his confidence because he has been wondering whether he's going to be able to hang on here. But this year his third year, he's beginning to show up and I think he has improved a lot as a receiver.''

OPINION: Wilson doesn't have a long resume in the NFL, so for the moment he is only worth a look in the deepest of dynasty leagues. Keep an eye on the guy, though, as he does have upside with Derek Anderson under center in Cleveland. Offenses like Cleveland can often produce a solid WR3 and Wilson might already have a grip on that third receiver spot heading into '08. Plus, with Donte Stallworth's injury history, and we do like Stallworth a lot this year, Wilson could be asked to do more than most expect this upcoming season.

  • According to Cincinnati.com, Bengals WR Chad Johnson (ankle surgery) returned to practice on Monday.

OPINION: Johnson is currently a steal, as you can grab him in the middle of the third-round. Take advantage of that action before it's too late. Johnson might just finish as a top 3WR in 2008.

  • According to ESPN, when Packers QB Aaron Rodgers was asked how he felt about Brett Favre's reinstatement, Rodgers suggested that his focus was on the things that he can control.

OPINION: Rodgers always appears to have a solid attitude on the situation, but he also looks ready to battle for the job. If this thing does boil down to a competition, Favre is going to steal back the keys to the starting line-up faster than you can say "Aaron Rodgers has only thrown one touchdown pass in his career." If the Packers want to win in 2008, and contend, they will announce Favre as the team's starter and be plenty satisfied with their future QB situation (as they still have Rodgers for one more season and a freshly signed Brian Brohm). If the team continues to take the "we've moved on" approach, expect a trade to go down possibly today (Monday). If they take the trade route, we honestly believe that the organization will be setting their franchise back, not building a stronger future.

  • According to JSOnline, an executive in personnel for an NFL team, who is close to the situation, told the Journal Sentinel that the Green Bay Packers called the Minnesota Vikings on Friday and informed the club that Favre was available via trade. "They've kind of said through one of their (front-office) guys that if Favre did report they would potentially trade him within the division," the executive of an NFL team said on Sunday.

OPINION: Don't be shocked if tomorrow the Vikings, or Packers, shoot this down. We are not saying that the report is wrong, we're just suggesting how cloudy all of this situation is, and will continue to be right up until the end. Also, don't be shocked if Favre is traded, or at least a deal is set-up, by the end of today (Monday). Stay tuned - Favre updates should dominate the news wires today.
